“ “parler pour RIEN (dire)” (Speaking to [say] NOTHING), “un RIEN du tout” (NOTHING at all). In 3xRIEN (Mettre en boîte)/ContreCarrer (2016) (3xNothing [Boxing/Countering], 2016), a box holding three leafl ets mixing narration and poetry, Flore Saunois displays her “variations” on the word “nothing”, thus creating an ephemeral “Collection de pas Grand Chose” (Collection of Practically Nothing). She also layers different types of paper, such as silk, tracing, or glossy paper. Her text appears on and underneath a fragile, transparent “skin”. This work announces a red thread: language and writing as materials. Elastic meaning, rhythmic syllables, plastic texts.
Language is precariously poised between being and nothingness - when they are named, things becomes real, even “nothing” does. Saunois’ work focuses on this tipping point between the appearence and the disappearance of things. In her works on glass paper or carbon paper, texts explicitly mention these surfaces that, instead of ensuring their preservation, might bring about their own erasure.
Demanding, subtle, such “unimportant objetcs humorously bringing up questions that are too heavy for them to bear” are not devoid of irony. [...] The specific medium chosen for each work (installation, video, sound art, or livre d’artiste) becomes a translation of the artist’s words into shapes. [...] And words come into being. ”
